Mellon Foundation seminar on the topic of migration and the humanities. Migration plays as critical a role in the moral imagination of the humanities as it does in shaping the activist vision of humanitarianism and human rights. Too often, the humanities are summoned merely as witnesses whose primary aesthetic and moral values lie in their illustrative powers of empathy and evocation. Yet the intellectual formation of the humanities—their very conception of the nature of meaning, knowledge, and morals—is deeply resonant with the displacement of values and the revision of norms that shape narratives of migrant lives. We welcome applications from scholars in all fields whose work innovatively engages with migration and the humanities. In addition to pursuing their own research projects, fellows will be core participants in the bi-weekly seminar meetings for both academic terms of the fellowship. Other participants will include faculty and graduate students from Harvard and other universities in the region, and occasional visiting speakers. Fellows will receive stipends of $65,000, medical insurance, additional research support of $2,500, and (for those not already in residence in Greater Boston) $1,500 in moving expenses. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Harvard for the term of the fellowship. Basic Qualifications Applicants for 2021-22 fellowships must have received a doctorate or terminal degree in or after May 2018. Applicants without a doctorate or terminal degree must demonstrate that they have completed all requirements for a terminal degree (i.e. dissertation defense) by August 1, 2021. International scholars outside the United States are appointed under either the J-1 visa (Research Scholar status) or F-1 OPT (Optional Practical Training), depending on their circumstances. If awarded a fellowship, the term of appointment is September 1, 2021-August 31, 2022. The Mahindra Center reserves the right to cancel awards if the recipient is unable to meet these conditions of completion and visa status. The laboratory focuses on identifying the genetic basis for sensitivity to cardiac radiation, as well as the mechanisms of radiation-induced cardiovascular dysfunction. Another focus of the laboratory is to identify factors in the tumor microenvironment that alter radiation sensitivity in breast cancers. The overall goal of the laboratory is to improve the therapeutic ratio of radiation therapy by increasing efficacy or radiation in the tumor, while minimizing side effects from radiation exposure to normal tissues, with a special emphasis on radiation-induced cardiac disease. The position offers an excellent opportunity to conduct research in a supportive and stimulating environment, closely collaborating with biologists, clinicians and other scientists, within the Department and other Institutes across the campus, including the McDonnell Genome Institute and the Institute for Informatics., as well as the Preclinical Research Facility and the Mouse Cardiovascular Phenotyping Core. Candidates are expected to use mouse and/or rat models of radiation-induced cardiac dysfunction and genetic models and pharmacologic approaches to identify new therapeutic targets to improve outcomes of patients who are exposed to cardiac radiation as part of their cancer treatment. The mission of this Program, which is funded through the Rajen Kilachand Fund, is to understand the underlying design, assembly, and control principles governing multicellular systems, and to take advantage of these principles for the development of new technologies and therapies. Although the research community has developed a deep understanding of cells, their inner workings, and how they function as individuals, in nature, cells function as multicellular systems – operating in coordinated communities with emergent properties that are not present in isolated cells. Exploiting its unique combination of strengths in Synthetic Biology, Microbial Engineering, Tissue Engineering, Data Science, and Biophysics, Boston University is uniquely poised to address this major gap by establishing a new Multicellular Design Program. The Multicellular Design Program will establish a physical and organizational infrastructure that stewards a self-sustaining, vibrant community of Boston University scientists to pioneer this critical new field. Specifically, the MDP will provide： 1) a platform for scientists across Boston University to bring to bear their expertises from computing, physics, mathematics, engineering, biology, and medicine into a major integrated effort to understand the design principles of multicellular systems, 2) a rich training ground for students and fellows at these interfaces, 3) a new science that researchers across the globe can participate in. The main focus of the laboratory is to investigate novel immunological aspects of stem cells and their niche. We are testing whether the niche acts as an immunological sanctuary for stem cells, termed an immune privileged site, which 1) protects stem cells from stress and inflammation, 2) promotes engraftment of transplanted allogeneic stem cells, 3) shields malignant stem cells from immune attack and therapeutic insults, including tumor immunotherapy. Immune privilege was originally demonstrated in the 1950s to exist within the testis and placenta—organs accommodating embryonic and germline stem cells. Although more recent stem cell research has identified various  tissue-committed stem cells and their microenvironments, or niches, little is known about whether niches are immune privileged. We have recently demonstrated that the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niche within the bone marrow accommodates a unique regulatory T cell population which renders the niche immune privileged (Cell Stem Cell 22, 445-453, 2018; Nature 474(7350), 216-9, 2011). Our group has demonstrated that these niche-residential Tregs and their product, extracellular adenosine, play critical roles in BM transplantation, injury and malignancies. Our work has further identified these niche-residential Tregs as a promising source of cell therapy for transplantation and tissue injury. Current research focuses include (but are not limited to) studies to further uncover fundamental mechanisms of immune privilege and to translate our knowledge into the clinical settings of cancer, transplantation, tissue injury and infection. Multiple experimental approaches, including transgenic animal models, sequencing, and intravital two-photon microscopy, will be used. Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. or a visiting scholar and/or M.D. degree, and a strong background in stem cell biology or immunology. The post would suit an ambitious post-doctoral or a visiting scholar researcher with a strong background and interest in using pluripotent stem cells to model disease. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Amanda Carr and Prof. Pete Coffey to establish an induced pluripotent stem cell hub that will be used to explore early AMD disease mechanisms in retinal pigment epithelium cells, including ageing, stress and wound healing. The position is funded by a Moorfields Eye Charity philanthropic donation for a period of 2 years in the first instance. The Vahedi laboratory is part of the Department of Genetics, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. We are a core member of the Epigenetics Institute (https://goo.gl/GnaZdx) and a member of the Institute for Immunology (https://goo.gl/Vi2jAP). We are a member of the Human Pancreas Analysis Program at Penn (https://hpap.pmacs.upenn.edu/) and have an unprecedented opportunity to perform deep profiling of the human endocrine pancreas and its interaction with the immune system. Our laboratory is multidisciplinary, integrating computational and experimental approaches to develop a system-level understanding of gene regulation in immune cells. We blend epigenomics, human and mouse genetics, immunology, and computational biology to pursue a new understanding of gene regulation in the immune system. We use bulk assays including ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, and chromatin conformation assays such as HiC, in addition to cutting-edge single-cell genomic assays such as single-cell (sc)ATAC-seq and scRNA-seq or the single-cell Oligopaint imaging technique. Our lab’s major contributions in less than 5 years : (1) the discovery of genome misfolding in type 1 diabetes (https://www.cell.com/immunity/fulltext/S1074-7613(20)30030-3 received major media attention and featured on journal’s cover). (2) the discovery of TCF-1 as a pioneer factor in T cells (https://www.cell.com/immunity/fulltext/S1074-7613(18)30033-5 featured on journal’s cover). (3) the development of a novel computational method for the joint profiling of chromatin accessibility and CAR-T integration site analysis at the single-cell level (https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2020/02/19/1919259117.short) The lab is funded by National Institutes of Health. Our contribution to single-cell genomic field was recently recognized by a Chan Zuckerberg Initiative award. Experimental candidates are required to hold a PhD or a visiting scholar in molecular biology, immunology, or biochemistry. Experience in genomics and epigenomics will be viewed favorably. Potential training opportunities exist for the experimental scientist joining our lab to learn computational genomics. Computational candidates are required to hold a PhD in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics or related programs. Expertise in machine learning and statistics in addition to programing in Python and R in a Unix environment is required. The Olzmann research group investigates the fundamental principles that govern organelle and lipid homeostasis in health and disease. The lab leverages interdisciplinary approaches, including systems-level discovery strategies (e.g. CRISPR screens) and cell biology / biochemistry methods, to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying: 1) The biogenesis and functions of neutral lipid storage organelles called lipid droplets 2) Lipotoxicity, such as the pathways that govern oxidative lipid damage in the non-apoptotic cell death pathway known as ferroptosis. The lab is interested in the potential to target lipid storage and lipotoxicity pathways for therapeutic benefit in metabolic disease and cancer. The exact aims of the research project will be tailored to the expertise of the applicant and to complement the overarching Olzmann lab research interests. The Olzmann lab seeks highly motivated applicants with the courage, creativity, and passion to transcend boundaries in order to discover fundamental principles of biology. This project, funded by the BBSRC, will estimate de novo mutation rates for multiple species of Drosophila, and integrate this analysis with other population-genetic parameters in a phylogenetic context. This post will involve the development and implementation of bioinformatics pipelines, and the evolutionary analysis of population-genomic data from multiple species. Applicants should have (or be near completion of) a PhD or a visiting scholar in bioinformatics, evolutionary genomics, population genetics, or a closely related field. A successful candidate is likely to have experience with sequence-based bioinformatics (e.g. genome assembly, annotation and/or resequencing data), including a good knowledge of relevant scripting languages (e.g. Python and/or R, Bash, Snakemake) and software (e.g. read-mappers, genome-assemblers, variant-callers). The candidate should have an excellent academic track record (commensurate with their career stage and experience), ideally including peer-reviewed published work. They are expected to be active in developing the project, to collaborate with all team members, and to contribute to an enthusiastic working atmosphere.
