A postdoctoral research position is available in the area of Operando X-ray Characterisation of Electrocatalysts within the group of Professor Robert Weatherup in the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford.

Electrocatalysts are critical to efforts to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, where they can be used to produce fuels and high-value chemicals using electricity obtained from renewable sources. Deployment of these technologies at scale requires electrocatalysts produced from earth-abundant elements that exhibit both low overpotentials and long-term stability.

This project aims to develop and apply novel operando X-ray spectroscopy techniques to understand the activity and stability of promising electrocatalysts for water splitting and the reduction of carbon dioxide. This will involve the use of laboratory X-ray absorption spectroscopy (easyXAFS300+) and advanced techniques available at international synchrotron facilitates. 

Building on work within the group on operando technique development, you will design and test an operando electrochemical cell for probing catalyst chemical state under realistic electrochemical conditions. This will include the capability to perform online activity measurement, which will be used to study model electrocatalysts to understand how their electronic structure affects performance and stability. The ultimate aim is to reveal relationships between the chemical state of electrocatalysts and their performance so that improved catalysts can be rationally designed.

Previous experience in both electrochemical methods and X-ray characterisation is essential, as well as a track record of peer-reviewed publications. This position will initially run until March 2026 (~20 months), with the possibility for extension subject to the award of follow-on funding.
