JOB DESCRIPTION:
Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research.
Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
Job Description:
Dr. Maud Mavigner is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and is seeking a highly motivated Post-doctoral Research Fellow to perform basic and translational research to investigate human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) persistence.. Her research focuses on developing strategies to cure HIV using the model of SIV infection of rhesus macaques.
The key obstacle to cure HIV infection is a reservoir of latently-infected memory CD4+ T cells that persist despite long-term antiretroviral therapy and is maintained though cellular proliferation. The objective of the proposed projects is to investigate the role of CD8+ T cells in HIV reservoir establishment and maintenance in infants.
Responsibilities
The post-doctoral fellow will lead a NIH-funded in vivo study in nonhuman primates and support several in vitro related projects. This position is ideal for a candidate who has a solid background in immunology and/or virology and is interested in projects with both basic and translational features.
Interested candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or an M.D. and have less than three years of postdoctoral experience. Applications should have a strong background in immunology or virology. Excellent oral and written communication skills are desired as is the ability to work as part of a team. Experience working with nonhuman primates and flow cytometry is preferred, but not required. Salary will be commensurate with experience and will follow the NIH guidelines.
The Mavigner lab is located in the Health Science Research Building II on the Emory campus. The post-doctoral fellow will join a dynamic and growing team with involvement in large collaborative studies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
