Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Gambling Research & Policy Initiative (GRPI) is housed within the Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology with the overall goal to conduct research on gambling awareness, behavior, risk, and gambling-related harms, including – North Carolina gambling behavior and risk prevalence studies, state/national/international studies focused on marginalized groups, and other studies aimed at filling research gaps.
Job Duties
The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in gambling behavior, risk, and gambling-related harms. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of multiple ongoing interdisciplinary research projects of the Gambling Research & Policy Initiative.
Duties may include:
hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics and/or qualitative data, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications.
Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.
Approximately 60% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to conducting research and data integrity.
Approximately 25% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to manuscript writing, grant proposals, research reports, and presentations.
Approximately 15% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students working on GRPI projects.
Minimum Education/Experience
English Proficiency
Demostrated written and oral communication skills
Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative analysis
Demonstrated interest in addiction-related or related research
Ability to function independently with minimal supervision/instructions
Ability to meet deadlines, handle and prioritize requests
PhD in psychology, criminal justice/criminology, sociology, social work, counseling, public health, or related fields
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Demonstrated interest in gambling-specific research
Leadership and/or supervisory experience
Strong ability to manage and query large datasets, and to analyze and interpret results, using software tools appropriate to the project
Experience in successfully building data modeling and visualization tools and proficiency with data visualization tools
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the community at large
Experience writing data manuals, codebooks, or other means of data documentation and visualization
Skilled at managing multiple projects, tracking, and resolving complex issues as they occur
License or Certification Required by the Department

Appointments are typically for a one-year period. Five years (typically five appointments of one year) is typically the maximum total period that any individual may serve as a Scholar.
