The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Fisheries Stock Assessment Modeling. The position will be located in Miami, FL or Beaufort, NC (or remotely).
We seek a postdoctoral research associate to join our research team in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) Fisheries Branch of the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center. The successful applicant will work closely with scientists at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami and Beaufort to advance ongoing efforts to incorporate climate-driven episodic mortality events (e.g., red tide) into stock assessment models. The successful applicant will evaluate, through simulation-testing, various approaches to including ecosystem drivers in the stock assessment process.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
The successful candidate will:
- Integrate population dynamics data from existing stock assessment models and environmental disturbance data from existing ecosystem models into a simulation framework to test and evaluate different approaches to modeling environmental stressors
- Rely on existing Stock Synthesis simulation testing platforms (i.e., ss3sim, SSMSE) to generate operating models simplified from real GoM grouper stock assessments
- Implement an organized, transparent and repeatable workflow using Git version control
- Present findings at scientific meetings and publish the results in scientific journals
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD in fisheries, marine science, environmental science, statistics, mathematics or a related field and demonstrated ability in publishing results in peer-reviewed literature
- Experience or training in population dynamics or fisheries stock assessment
- Demonstrated experience with simulation model development/parameterization
- Proficiency in the R programming language
- Experience with git/GitHub version control or willingness to learn
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
- The ability and desire to work independently as well as collaboratively
Preference will be given to individuals with strong modeling, quantitative, and statistical skills. Familiarity with statistical catch-at-age models (such as Stock Synthesis) is preferred. The position will be located at the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami, FL or Beaufort, NC. Remote work is an option.
A statement of interest, CV, and the names of 3 people who can provide letters of recommendation are required.
